About Dr. Kathryn Shulman
I’m Dr. Kathryn Shulman, a licensed naturopathic doctor and homeopathic practitioner based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I work with both clients and patients, in person and via telehealth.
The way I practice medicine and care for my community reflects much of what I learned from my parents. Their commitment to serving others became part of how I wanted to live and work.
My father began his career as a pulmonary specialist and later became a small-town internist in Vermont, where I grew up. He eventually returned to military service with the Vermont National Guard and later worked as a hospitalist in rural New Mexico. Throughout the different chapters of his career, what remained consistent was his commitment to medicine, service, and the people he cared for.
My mother was an elementary school teacher before having children and later became the office manager for my father’s medical practice. She also held service and leadership roles in our community and synagogue, bringing the same instinct for teaching, caring, organizing, and helping others into nearly everything she did.
I carry forward much of my father’s medical curiosity, warmth, and kind bedside manner, along with my mother’s ability to make complex ideas understandable and to put knowledge into service.
Before becoming a doctor, I earned a degree in sociology and worked with underserved populations in the nonprofit sector. I also taught English and yoga to children while living abroad. Throughout that time, I continued studying natural medicine as a personal interest.
I became a certified herbalist and yoga instructor and, in my 40s, earned my doctorate in naturopathic medicine.
Early in my practice, I focused primarily on caring for children with autoimmune and neurodevelopmental conditions. Homeopathy became central to that work, particularly in supporting children with PANS/PANDAS, complex behavioral and neurological presentations, and children navigating life along the autism spectrum.
Since moving to Santa Fe, my practice has expanded to include more adults while I continue to care for children. Much of my work now involves acute illness, environmental medicine, hormone replacement therapy, metabolic and weight-management support, and the care of chronic conditions. When appropriate, that may also include helping patients carefully reduce or deprescribe medications as their health changes.
As a licensed naturopathic doctor, I have a broad scope of practice and a wide clinical toolkit. I enjoy tailoring care to each person and drawing from the approaches that best support their individual needs, whether that means homeopathy, botanical medicine, nutrition, Chinese medicine techniques, conventional or compounded medications, or a combination of approaches.
Teaching and supporting my community are also important parts of my work. I offer food-as-medicine classes and created a naturopathic summer camp program for children, something I’m especially proud of.
I love helping people gain greater awareness and agency in caring for their own health, and I especially enjoy making that learning practical, approachable, and even fun.
When I’m not seeing patients or clients, I’m usually caring for dogs, cats, houseplants, or my garden. I love living in Santa Fe, the City Different, and taking advantage of its expansive art and music scene, as well as hiking, biking, and simply enjoying the high-desert air, sunshine, and mountains.
